Vallejo Old Gold

I have tried using this paint a few times now and I just don't get any usable results with it. I mix the paint well and then pour it into a clear pot and add a bit of white spirit. The white spirit instantly changes the paint into a dried up thick paste. In your videos this does not happen, it just thins it out and keeps it flowing. I'm getting the opposite results to those shown. Any idea why this would be happening?

Terry

That's becouse you need to use isoprol alcohol instead of white spirit.
I think he did a vid about Vallejo golds, check his play list ;)

After rewatching the video I have found the error of my ways. I was confusing the white spirit for oil washes with the vallejo gold video. Ordered a bottle from Ebay!

Hi I'm currently have this issue myself, but I am using 99.99% isopropyl alcohol. : O its fine for awhile but after about 2 mins when i add some more it just turns into like a brown sludge.

its all dependant on the amount you use, all paint has a saturation level, so its a good idea to keep in mind that it will thin to a brown mess if you try to go past that level, also the evaporation rate of alcohol at room temperature is depentandent on the amount, if you put a very small amount or liquid gold down you will have to add more often as the smaller amounts will evaporat faster, and if the room is warm it will be faster still, try using the paint in a very small pot, thimble sized, this will give less surface area with the air so the alcohol in the paint will evaporate slower, and/or add drops or alcohol every 30 seconds or so, and remember not to get water on the brush at any point, the water will react with the alcohol and paint and cause problems.

also remember to keep mixing the paint in the pot as the pigment in the paint drops to the bottom very fast.

Hi

I have problems with liquid gold and are eating away at my basecolor and sometimes primer. Seems the solvents are to strong and I cant get a smooth layer on! Anyone know how to fix this?

Thanks!

Hi

I think your problem may stem from not sealing you model prior to using the Old Gold... try hitting your model with a thin sealer coat of Vallejo satin varnish first.

Liquid gold should not do that. Do you thin it with Alcohol?
You should not need to seal your model with a varnish before using Liquid Gold.

Mix it with 96% Alcohol (I use 96% Alcohol ketonatus) and use a syntetic brush. I also mix it in an iron cub, but plastic should also work.

You use Vallejo colours for base colour?
