Hi WickedPaul, not sure if this helps and I'm sure Yaroslaw will have another brilliant tip as he always does (that's why we're all here!), but from memory the Imperial Armour Masterclass Vol. 1 book had a good write-up on this very topic. They basecoated in a typical silver (chainmail, then mithril), then used a series of very highly thinned washes of various colours to achieve a banding effect with smooth colour transitions.

First step is making chrome surface. File the part with sand paper 2000 grit and clean all dust.
Apply Humbrol Metal Cote - Chrome
Brush the surface to get a "mirror effect"
Appy washes - yellow, orange, red, blue, blue in order to acheive tis effect
